From The Hidden Life in Freemasonry by C.W. Leadbeater
The Egyptians took the chisel to symbolize the intellect, which they regarded as a keen-edged instrument. They considered that the man who used his intellect would be able to remove the excrescences of superstition from the beliefs that presented themselves to him, until he became a perfect ashlar, when his thought would be well-defined and true.
The common gavel was considered to be the divine force behind the chisel and was interpreted as the human will.
